Many people are looking to learn how to grow carrots in their gardens. After all, you can’t ignore the tasty and succulent taste of fresh carrots from your yard. Thankfully, the plant is easy to tend and perfect for beginners.

5 Tips On How To Grow Carrots

Planting carrots is a straightforward job. You start by germinating the seeds and regulate the sunlight and water amount for the next three months. However, there are tips for beginners to get the best carrots in their first harvest.

  1. Choose the Right Variety
There are dozens of carrot variants that you can plant at home. Each variant caters to different types of weather. Some are better for colder climates while others are not.
In general, the plant needs 60-90 days until harvest. But again, you need to know which variant will give you the least challenge. For example, if you live in a cold climate land, you shouldn’t plant the YaYa variant which is best for the warmer climate.

  2. Select the planting Site
One of the reasons why many home gardeners love growing carrots is because you can plant them directly on the ground or in a container. The container has to be at least 12 inches deep to accommodate the plant that can grow up to 9-10 inches long.
Most gardeners prefer raised beds to plant carrots. But containers work best if you don’t have a lot of space and want better pest control.

  3. Plant Spacing
Many gardeners call this process as thinning the carrots. When the carrots start seedling, you can start removing some of them to encourage the others to grow. You can use your fingers to carefully dig the plants to make space for the remaining carrots, roughly 2-3 inches.

  4. Know When to Start Planting
If you love carrots so much and have been incorporating them into your diet, then you need to know when is the best time to start planting. Most carrots are sturdy enough to withstand the weather all year. But of course, there will be slight deviations in how it tastes when they have optimum conditions.
The sowing process takes about 2-3 weeks until you start seeing some seedlings. And you should check with your local frost date. Because if you want to have a summer harvest, you must start planting not long after the last spring frost.

  5. Harvest Immediately
Unless you’re overwintering the carrots, you need to harvest them as soon as they’re ready. Leaving the carrots on the ground for a long time can change their texture to be hard and woody.
Several carrot farmers claimed that they only need to cover the land during the winter and they still can have winter harvest. But since it’s not a trick for beginners, you may want to keep it for fall harvest for now.

Carrots taste better when you eat them fresh. They are sweet and crunchy, and some variants have unique flavors. And now that you know how to grow carrots, you can have the sweetness all year round.
